Brixton House is a newly opened theatre situated in the heart of the South London community in Brixton. We are thrilled to announce we will receive an uplift and continued funding support from Arts Council England as part of the National Portfolio Organisations. As a new venue, this is fantastic news for us to receive a considerable investment to support our work until 2026.
It is our commitment to continue to serve both our artistic community and local communities with the same passion and drive for change. We are proud to present a diverse portfolio of work that champions stories and voices from the global majority in an inclusive way to sit firmly within the wider theatre landscape and British theatrical and literary canon.
Since opening, we have welcomed artists to come and share intimate and personal stories that felt timely and perfectly placed in our home for artists in Brixton. Tonderai Munyevu’s Mugabe, My Dad & Me opened our doors and recently won the ‘Best New Play’ at the UK Theatre Awards. Two of our Housemates Shakira Newton and Sonny Nwachukwu, whose early work featured in our artists’ development and new work festival, were nominated at the Black British Theatre Awards. Our theatre enables artists to comfortably delve into heritage, culture, and personal narratives to create poignant and resonant work that audiences can connect with and enjoy.
“Brixton House is embarking on a unique journey at this very challenging time for our sector. Our survival and the space to flourish is strongly dependent on our subsidy from ACE. We are incredibly fortunate and grateful for the continued support, which enables us to keep evolving our plans. This funding will allow us to provide quality arts and cultural experiences for our audiences and international communities. Brixton House is a home for everyone, and we strive to champion the stories of those fighting to be seen and heard with expert support, compassion and quality as part of our constant pursuit of excellence.
Artistic Director & joint CEO, Gbolahan Obisesan

Our theatre is a caring space that supports its staff, nurtures its community, and thrives from the creative energy of the artists, participants and audiences who call it home.
