Exhibition: The Futurists

1-29 June

Curated by Danny Bailey in collaboration with the Brixton House Good Neighbours, a lively and vibrant weekly gathering of African and Caribbean elders, The Futurists seeks to honour their lived experiences, memories and cultural contributions, while also positioning them as active, visible and vital members of Brixton’s present and future.

Through family photographs, striking portraits, and short films, participants will share personal memories, stories, and their hopes for the future of a community they’ve been instrumental in shaping. The Futurists exhibition and photobook present a chance to connect with a living history of the community, see Brixton through the eyes of its longest-standing residents, and show how they continue to inspire and enrich the neighbourhood.

Brixton House Good Neighbours supports elderly African Caribbean people to engage and take part in arts, health and wellbeing activities. The group is a lively, vibrant gathering of elders who participate in various activities to help reduce isolation and loneliness and promote good health and wellbeing whilst developing creative skills.

Originally from Hackney, Danny Bailey is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, cultural curator, and facilitator whose work centres his Caribbean heritage. Drawing on the culture and narratives born from the diaspora, he uses this creative vocabulary to challenge ideas around identity and politics, with the aim of imagining new worlds of collective thriving.

Danny Bailey’s artistic practice spans acting and performance, writing, filmmaking, costume, and photography—each serving as a vehicle towards a shared creative vision. He is also the founder of @THEPALACEOFTHEDOGS, a platform and creative space based in Peckham. Its mission is to support Black and Brown artists in exploring social and political themes through their art, free from capitalist constraints. The platform runs artist residencies, exhibitions, workshops, events, and produces digital content that uplifts emerging artists, with a focus on performance, filmmaking, digital art, and community building.

This work has led him to create more space for the arts within the wider community. He served as Creative Director of Peckham Festival for two years, curated public art and murals, and was a co-curator of the Uprising Festival at Brixton House, marking 40 years since the 1985 Brixton Uprisings.

Acting credits include:
The Harder They Come – Stratford East (nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Stalls to Stage Awards)
Mr Loverman – BBC
A Strange Loop – Barbican
Girl from the North Country – Canada; Gielgud Theatre; Old Vic
Get Up Stand Up – Lyric Theatre

He recently completed a photography exhibition at UCL East, Words Matter. As a playwright, he was shortlisted for the Tony Craze Award for his play Pressure, which is currently in development. His conceptual films Soft Bwoi and Black Exodus have screened internationally, including at the V&A, Tate Modern, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

He is currently developing three new short films as a writer and director, set to be filmed in summer 2026.
