Housemates 2026: SUGA

Description

Drowning in debt, Harry signs up to a website connecting struggling individuals with wealthy ‘sugar daddies’ and begins a seemingly straightforward and initially transactional relationship with Daddy. As their relationship evolves beyond money, fantasies begin to clash with bitter realities; nothing is as sweet as it seems when it’s SUGA-coated.

Developed through Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab and longlisted for the Theatre 503 International Playwriting Award, this surrealist critique of late-stage capitalism follows one man’s attempt to keep his head above water in a system designed to keep pulling him under.

Max Hyner is a South London–based actor, writer, performer and poet. He trained at the Guildford School of Acting (MFA Acting), alongside Soho Theatre’s Writers’ Lab and Character Comedy Lab, and Arvon’s Introduction to Playwriting, where he received a fully funded place. His debut play Ankle Swingers was staged at Omnibus Theatre as part of the 97% Festival. His work SUGA, developed on Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab, was longlisted for the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award. Blending surrealism with sharp humour, his work centres Queer London voices, exploring identity, intimacy and the absurdities of contemporary life.

Sean Landis is a theatre director from Australia, now based in London. As Artistic Director of Fruit Box Theatre, his recent credits include the award-winning Cruise by Jack Holden and Back to Birdy by Zach Bui. A specialist in new writing, he founded the RIPE Development Programme in 2022 to build a pipeline for original Queer theatre from conception to fruition. For this work, he has been recognised as a finalist in the ACON Honour Awards and named in Out for Australia’s “30 Under 30.” His practice champions bold new writing and LGBTQIA+ voices through collaborative, artist-led processes.

Maya is a freelance multidisciplinary artist who specialises in designing for performance and events. After graduating with a first class degree from The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, she is currently based and working in London. Recent theatre includes: Oceans Apart, I was in House and I Was Waiting for the Rain to Come (AKRO Theare); Is This Thing On? (Hope Theatre/Northern Tour/Underbelly Cowgate); Go! The Musical (Upstairs at the Gatehouse); Laura Kieler (Gorge Harrison Workshop Theatre).

The development of SUGA has been supported by Soho Theatre, Masterclass Trust and Camden People’s Theatre.
