UPRISING: House of Pearl – An evening celebrating Queer love

25 October-25 October

Honour legendary Brixton icon Pearl Alcock and vogue with us as we celebrate 40 years of resistance in the community.

Brixton House and Kiki House Maison Laveaux present

Description

To honour activist, artist and community advocate Pearl Alcock—whose mission was to create safe spaces for the Queer Black community in Brixton—Brixton House will transform into a late night shubeen paying homage to Pearl’s cafe on the famous Railton Road.

The Kiki House Maison Laveaux, led by Mother Bambi Laveaux, Princess Amani, Isaac, and Eli Laveaux, will take over Brixton House to host the On The Block Kiki Ball, closing out the UPRISING Festival and celebrating 40 years of resistance in the community.

This powerful event will honour the legendary Brixton icon Pearl Alcock, along with other Queer figures, icons and movements of resistance throughout Black British history, whose legacies have shaped and continue to shape the fabric of Brixton.

The ball will celebrate the resilience of Queer spaces and the unbreakable spirit of Brixton, while offering workshops on voguing categories to educate, empower and inspire. With a focus on both performance and legacy, the event ensures that the transformative power of voguing and the ongoing fight for freedom and expression live on for generations to come.

Followed by late night DJs in the bar.

About the workshops

Runway

Runway was created to show that members of the ballroom community could shine as much as the fashion world’s supermodels. Learn how to walk like a model, sell your garment and bring attitude and confidence onto the runway.

The category is divided into 2 streams – European and All American.

European Runway brings a feminine style, inspired by European fashion shows. Competitors are judged on their ability to “sell” a conceptual outfit and perform with grace, wit, and confidence, incorporating poses, expressive movements, and dramatic flair to embody the look.

All American Runway brings a masculine style, inspired by male models walking in American shows. While competitors are still judged on their creativity, look and ability to sell it, they do so through a more straight-forward and composed walk.

Vogue Femme

In the ’80s, voguing was introduced to the scene. The original form of voguing, “Old Way” is characterised by the formation of lines, symmetry, and precision with fluid-like movement. Egyptian hieroglyphs, martial arts, breakdance, popping, and male fashion poses serve as the original inspirations.

Vogue Femme was created in the mid-90s by Fem Queens (Trans Women) who performed the “old way” while embodying femininity and making the movements more fluid. It is made of five basic elements: catwalk, duckwalk, hands, floor, and spins/dips.
