UPRISING: In A New Light

2 October-2 October

Part-performance, part-discussion, Skin Deep centre the ways young Black Brits see themselves.

Brixton House and Skin Deep present

Description

Inspired by the recent reprint of a 2018 article on the revival of Winsome Pinnock’s ‘Leave Taking’, In A New Light explores theatre written and produced by Black British women in the 1980s.

Through a curated selection of play extracts, a cast of four multi-roling actors will bring to life stories about Black British life. From discovering Queer ancestors to hiding a sickle cell diagnosis from work, from squatting to escape a strict parent to the storied life of Claudia Jones, In A New Light breathes life into stories otherwise siloed to the archive, facilitating richer understandings of where we are today and celebrating those who’ve shaped our culture.

The performance will be followed by a panel led by In A New Light curator, Nkenna Akunna. Panelists and casting to be announced soon.
