The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid a visit to Brixton House this morning to celebrate Windrush Day 2022 by meeting with youth organisation ‘Elevate’, a local program that aims to support creatives and improve the opportunities of young people.
The Royal couple were greeted by Lambeth Council CEO Bayo Dosunmu, Dr Yvonne Thompson CBE DL, Chair of Black Cultural Archives, David Bryan, Chair of Brixton House, Artistic Director and joint CEO Gbolahan Obisesan and Elevate Young People representatives Benna (Reuben) Braithwaite and Sky Caesar.
The Duke and Duchess were introduced to our Front of House staff member and Elevate Alumni Emanuel Vuso, who gave them a tour of the building before heading to Studio 4 to take part in a film-making activity with young people from Oxygen Arts, Iconic Steps and the Marcus Lipton Youth Centre.
Kate enjoyed learning to use the film camera and asked many questions whilst being taught by the young creatives. Emanuel then led conversation on their aspirations, challenges and barriers to accessing the creative industries.
The Duke and Duchess then said their goodbyes before heading off to Waterloo to unveil the new national monument to celebrate the dreams and courage of the Windrush generation.
