RECLAMA: Harnessing Afro-Ecuadorian Women’s Heritage

Saturday 15 June
Ecuadorian activists Juanita and Lorena share their journey towards making Black and Afro women’s cultural practices more visible and discuss how to create positive narratives that contest Black women’s portrayal as victims. The sharing will be accompanied by an art exhibition and live dance performance from London-based Somas Chibchas Arts.
Reclama invites local organisations and collectives working to document Black culture and history, to promote women’s empowerment and leadership, and to push anti-racist, decolonial discourse to join this cross-cultural conversation.
The event will be 1hr 30mins and in Spanish and English.
The exhibition will be running from Monday 3 June in the Nook.
Women Resisting Violence Film Screening
Six short films. Latin American-British collaborations. All produced by women.
Sunday 16 June
Six short films curated by the Latin America Bureau showcase the rich crossover between independent filmmaking and academic research. They centre women telling their stories of resistance, with art often used as a tool for healing and expression.
The screening will be 1hr 15mins.
Accompanied by a short live performance from MinA Migrants in Action Theatre and a short Q&A with filmmakers.
All films include English subtitles where necessary.
