Latin X Brixton Festival presents

Description

Was first used in 1960s Brazil to teach literacy to landless agricultural workers. Its originator, Paulo Freire, envisioned an education that disrupts the teacher-student hierarchy of knowledge and engages students and teachers in a collaborative search for knowledge and solutions to the problems of their daily realities.

From its origins in 1960s Brazil, Pedagogy of the Oppressed continues to inspire educators around the world, including practitioners of Participatory English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in the UK. Participatory ESOL is a radical approach to language teaching that centres migrant learners’ voices, their lives and experiences.

In this participatory workshop we will be sharing London-based examples from our teaching practice of how the language classroom can be a space of possibilities for community-strengthening, critical dialogue and collective action.

This workshop will include Forum Theatre methods and participants will be invited to contribute their knowledge and experiences of education and language learning.
